Nestled in the heart of Japan is the beautiful city of Nara, famous for its free-roaming deer that call Nara Park home.

During spring, Nara Park comes alive with vibrant cherry blossoms, adding a touch of colour to this already historic and enchanting destination.

This historic city boasts significant temples and artwork dating back to the 8th century, when it served as Japan’s capital from 710 to 794.

One of the most unforgettable experiences in Nara is encountering the area’s wild deer. With around 1,400 deer roaming around Nara Park, visitors can witness these gentle creatures up close. According to legend, a white deer played a significant role in bringing the four gods of Kasugataisha Shrine to Mt. Mikasa in Nara, making them sacred and worthy of protection. Today, these deer are protected as Natural Monuments and revered as holy animals.

While they roam freely, the deer have developed a taste for special crackers called “shika senbei,” which are sold around Nara Park. These friendly creatures will even approach you in search of treats!

Nara is also home to eight notable temples, shrines, and ruins, including Tōdai-ji, Saidai-ji, Kōfuku-ji, Kasuga Shrine, Gangō-ji, Yakushi-ji, Tōshōdai-ji, and the Heijō Palace. These sites, together with the beautiful Kasugayama Primeval Forest form the Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
